How to Modify MX Records in cPanel

Introduction

At Lanetti, we understand the importance of efficient email communication for your business. MX (Mail Exchange) records direct your domain's emails to the appropriate mail server, and modifying these records is crucial when configuring custom email solutions like G Suite, Microsoft 365, or a third-party email provider. This guide explains how to modify MX records using cPanel in a few simple steps.

What Are MX Records?

MX records determine the servers responsible for handling your domain's incoming emails. Each MX record has:

  • Priority: A number indicating the order of preference (lower numbers are higher priority).
  • Destination: The mail server address.

How to Modify MX Records in cPanel

  1. Log in to Your cPanel

    • Open your browser and navigate to your cPanel login page (e.g., https://yourdomain.com/cpanel).
    • Enter your username and password, then click Log in.
  2. Access the Zone Editor

    • In the cPanel dashboard, locate the Domains section.
    • Click on Zone Editor.
  3. Locate Your Domain

    • In the Zone Editor, find the domain for which you want to modify the MX records.
    • Click the Manage button next to your domain.
  4. Modify Existing MX Records

    • Scroll through the list of DNS records until you find the MX records.
    • To edit an existing MX record:
      • Click the Edit button next to it.
      • Update the Priority and Destination fields as required.
      • Click Save Record to apply the changes.
  5. Add a New MX Record (if required)

    • If the desired MX record is not listed, click the Add Record button.
    • Select MX Record as the record type.
    • Fill in the following fields:
      • Priority: Enter the priority number provided by your email service provider.
      • Destination: Enter the mail server address (e.g., mail.example.com).
    • Click Save Record.
  6. Remove Unused MX Records (if necessary)

    • To avoid conflicts, delete any old or unnecessary MX records by clicking the Delete button next to the record.

Verify Your Changes

  • Changes to MX records typically propagate within a few minutes to 24 hours, depending on DNS caching.
  • You can use online tools like MXToolbox to verify that your MX records have been updated correctly.
